I understand these cameras us CF cards, Type 1 and 2. What's the difference? And is the CF memory a better option than the Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo?

Is there a high speed option? Is it any better than the regular speed CF cards?

Also, what capacity would be recommended? The user is not a professional photographer... he'd mostly be using it for recreation... photos of the kids, pictures on vacation, etc.

I don't know anything about these Sonys. Thanks in advance.

The difference between a Type 1 and a Type 2 CF card is the thickness. Type 1 cards use flash memory, but HP developed a hard disk drive thatwas smallenough tofit on a CF card, but it was too thick. The CompactFlash Association developed a thicker Type 2 card that HP's hard disk drive could fit into. Flash memory has reached capacities that exceed those of the hard disk drives, and they cost less, so there are few Type 2 cards still available.

CF cards are easier to find, less expensive, and/or faster than Memory Sticks.

The A300 and A350 don't support UDMA, so the really fast cards would be wasted, and may even hinder performance. But the A300 and A350 also don't have a particularly fast continuous shooting speed, so something on the order of a Sandisk Extreme III or a Lexar Platinum II would be plenty.

And as for capacity, look at the cost per gigabyte. That is usually most favorable at one or two steps down from the maximum capacity available. Another consideration, I think, is redundancy. That is, having two or more cards so you have a backup in case one fails.
