Both my Nikon D50 and Nikon D80 have three hidden files, and a hidden folder on the SD cards.

Folder: .Trashes

Files: '._.Trashes,' 'ignore_my_docs' and 'NIKON001.DSC.'

What exactly are they?

It looks like some of that may be designed in to keep applications from creating a My Documents folder. Here is one link on the subject:

I suspect that the trash is for the same purpose (so that apps deleting images don't look for a place to store them). You'd probably have to dig through the file system specs to find out for sure what they're for.

These are some valueless temporaryfiles and folders. Just format the card and they will be disappear.
