I have just bought a 4 gig Sandisk cf card for my nikon d1x camera. After formatting, as per usual, camera will not fire, and seems to tell me card is full (FL) is displayed where normally remaining shots is displayed. Is the card faulty, or is the dx1 not accepting this high capacity card?

The D1x does not support FAT32 (required for cards over 2GB in size).

You'll need to stick with 2GB or smaller cards in that camera.

Does this relate to the difference between a Type I and a Type II CF Card where one is FAT16, the other FAT32?

No. Most cards are Type I anyway (anymore, microdrives are about the only type ii cards around). That's just a physical difference in the card.

The file system is the issue (you need a camera with FAT32 support for cards larger than 2GB).

Thanks for the info. I recently upgraded from the Canon S5 to the Canon 400D DSLR which takes CF cards over 2GB. So I guess this means that it does support FAT32.
