Default Memory card question

I've done some reading, perhaps too much in regards to memory cards (information overload).

In reference to choosing a camera based on it's memory (if I had a couple choices), does it really matter what kind of memory card I get? I don't want a camera with proprietary memory. I dislike proprietary electronic media/devices.

I'd like to get whatever will be tomorrow's standard so I can put the card in another device, say a laptop or a palm pilot and transfer data to/from it. It'd be like a giant floppy drive for other purposes.

I'd suggest Compact Flash based devices for the reasons you have listed.

Besides having the best price/storage ratio and being common, they also have an advantage in the sheer amount of storage available compared to other memory types.

Does a microdrive (?512mb+?) count as a compact flash card? I'm still confused on that point.

the microdrive is a CFII based device. there are 2 basic types of CF cards. 98% are type 1. they are thinner. a microdrive is a type 2. your camera will say if it accepts type 2 or CFII cards. models such as the D7i, CP4500,5700 accept microdrives.

if you read further into these dicussion groups you will see many references to the microdrive. the opinions vary widely and should both educate and amuse you. mine included.
