Default Do I need to format my memory card?

Reading through my book on the xsi it says the memory card has to be formatted before use. Question, If I take my memory card out of my canon p&s and use it will it need to be formated first as well? I want to use it temporarily until I get another one dedicated to it.

Well, personally, I reformat my memory cards using the camera's menu choice for format prior to *every* reuse, even if it's being used in the same camera model.

That way, the card always starts out with a fresh FAT (File Allocation Table), just the way the camera expects it, since the camera is performing the format, reducing the potential for any file system corruption issues that may not be obvious. Formatting a card prior to every reuse is usually just as fast or faster than deleting images on it anyway, since only the File Allocation Table is being created.

You don't have to, but it is a good idea to do so. It make it work smoother.
