Default Problem...Pictures disappeared from memory card

I was taking pictures at the zoo this morning and had about 40 pictures on the memory card that I was able to view on the camera. I took 10 or so more pictures and when I went to look at them on the camera all the previous pictures disappeared. I only have 18 pictures on the memory card! What could have happened to the pictures and can I get them back?

Thanks!
Rachel
