Default reliability of cf cards

How reliable are the cf cards? I'm considering Lexar and Sandisk. Has anyone had any problems like not retaining images, complete meltdown, anything like this. Also, how many times can the cards be used? Will quality suffer after storing so many files over a period of time? I'm trying to get an idea of who makes the best cards.

I can't say who makes the best cards, but I've been using Lexar for over four years now without a problem whatsoever. I've specially put my 1GB one through intense use since May of last year, having taken nearly 20,000 frames since that time, and formatted the card at least 100 times as well. Not a hic-up! Also dropped it carelessly on a hard wood table, and on purpose too, just to show friends how robust the media is. No problems either :P

I'm mostly concerned about static discharge especially with the cards that have external contact points.
CF card contacts are internal (a big plus)
XD aren't!

I love winter, but the dry air is a real problem (and no, I don't want a humidifier).

Both those card manufacturers are good. They made cards that seem to be better made.

I prefer Lexar, but mostly of good reports when people have had to deal with them directly (and bad reports of dealing with SanDisk.) I support companies that treat their customers well.

I am very happy with my 512 Lexar card.
They rate their CF cards for 300,000 read/write cycles per memory unit. I think that would in most cases easily outlast your average digicam.
