Default Dumb question of the day (week?!): SD/MMC

I have a Palm Tungsten T3 that uses a card slot for memory for the MP3 player. The manual says it's an "SD card slot", and the card that came with the MP3 upgrade kit is a "MultiMediaCard". Are they in fact one and the same? Is their ANY difference between the two types of cards? Which would be preferable to get (at 256 or higher)?

SD cards and MMC cards are pretty much exactly the same on physical dimensions, SD card slots can usually use MMC cards too, but MMC card slots usually can't use SD cards. SD cards have an extra contact and this allows them to read/write at higher speeds than MMC cards, though you tend to have to pay extra to get that extra performance. MMC's tend to top out around 2MB/sec on read/write operations, whereas this is normally where SD cards start off. I believe, however, that there has been a new MMC format announced which will be faster than SD cards, but it's going to be a while before you see that becoming available.

if you really want to see the performance/capability of a good SD card ref:

this is a pro camera but this is the first device to finally deliver on the promised transfer rate of SD and that pretty impressive.

Thanks for the quick reply's. I appreciate your help. I'll probably go with SD cards.
