My friend has a Minolta Digital Camera which is about 4 years old now. The Smartmedia card which came with it is exactly the same size as mine but instead of having the right-hand corner cut off, it has the left one off. This card fits into my Photosmart printer smartmedia slot and reads from the card, butwont read from the 7-in-1 cardreader on the front panel of my new pc. Any ideas about this strange card? :? No-one we have met has ever seen one before!!

It has to do with the power supply (ie 5V vs 3.3V) for operation of the card(s), the 5V is the older card. Check page 4: http://www.sycard.com/docs/sm750man.PDF

Thanks for your swift help! That explains it all. So in effect there is no way he can use the 3.3v cards then> Or alternatively, would the 5.5v ones fit the standard readers/writers of today (ie a new printer he is hoping to buy with card slots in)

Most newer devices will support both the 3V and the older 5V cards, but this feature has to be designed in... like the PhotoSmart; However , this is not a universal rule and there's exception like your 7-in-one which assumed you can't buy the older/smaller sized card anymore.
