all the format command does on the camera is destroy the drive header info (the map as to who, what, where things areon the drive itself) that being done the card sees itself as being empty and will write over previous data which technically is still there (this is why recovery programs work and some better then others).


if you want to do a DOD type wipe of a card there are programs to do it BUT they will take their time to do their very thorough job. that is called a secure erase. if this program were in your camera it would probablydrain your battery dry real quick because it is very data/electrically/time intensive.
