Default smart media or compact flash?

Hello.

I'm about to purchase the Fuji 602.

What memory should I buy: smart media or compact flash?
What is the difference between the two?

Thanks,
Itay

Smartmedia is currently limit to 128Mb whereas the CF can go up much higher all the way to 1G or more. If you shoot at full resolution, you might end up having to swap flashes in or out more often (about 40+ @ ~3Mb/picture). It all depends on you, Smartmedia may be more convenient since it's thin and you can pack more in your wallet (but not recommended), but also more likely to bend... but CF is also very small!

I'll go for the largest even if you can (otherwise it's like reverting to good old day of swaping film canisters). Personally I use the 1G microdrive, but some people prefer the reliability of flash! I wouldn't worry about power consumption since your camera also use 'El cheapo' rechargeable NiMh AAs...

Thanks.
But, if we talk on the same capacity, is there a difference between the two?
Is there any better performance for a certain kind?

The Smartmedia controller is usually implemented in the firmware of the camera (ie deterministic); whereas, a separate ASIC chip acts 'as a hardisk ATApi controller' in the CF card, and depending on how fast the actual silicon flash dies are screened to, they have different speed ratings (ie x4, x16, x24 etc...)

I don't think you can, the Fuji F601Z uses smartmedia (correct me if wrong) and the two are not interchangable. The two are different size and shape. The F602 has 2 slots, one for each type.

Psst. Never a stupid question.

most I think willl agree that the CF's are somewhat sturdier.
nice to have the extra capacity when on trips, etc.

I am also considering the purchase of the S602. Does the cf1 memory need a cf1 to cf2 converter/adaptor to use cf1 type memory?

Thanks
Willoughby

No

A CF-2(thicker) will accomodate a CF-1 but not vice versa...

and I totally agree with Jim C. What's wrong with theses people? we just had MemoryStick Duo (1/2 size with an adapter), and now XD... Can everyone just boycott everything except for CF-II?
Seven to eight different incompatible format... Come ON!!!

Default confused!!

I just bought a new Fuji S602 with a 128MB CF.
However, I started having doubts whether the CF can work with this camera. I know it supports CFII or microdrive, but it says nowhere what type of card it is (type I or II).
Can I count on it to work with the Fuji, or should I replace it with a smart media card?
Thanks..
