Default Compact Flach cards - interchangeable?

If I change CF cards from one camera to another one, do I have to format the card then? Or can I hot swap the cards between the cameras as I like?

You can swap the cards in different cameras. The pistures from each camera will be put in each own separate directory. This is defined by the DCF standard that all digicam should abide to (ie DOS FAT).

BTW even music files (or voice memo) from MP3 players can be intermixed and hot-swap with no reformatting required.

Maybe it depends on the camera. I'm aware that at least one of CANONs camera uses CF card formattet in FAT32, while most others
uses FAT.

The card will be upward compatible, ie it'll work in the 1Ds (fat-32) as well. But if you have formatted the card for fat-32 in the Canon then it won't work in most other cameras.

BTW this was done to overcome the 2G limitation since the output from the above camera will quickly overcome existing card limitation especially in raw.

I guess you have to partition it into two drives (2G and 1G) if the camera support it... otherwise we are all out of luck

DCF 2.0 may be... I'm sure some working committees are already working on a draft!

I use CF card in Nikon CP950, Minolta D7i (FAT), and very often as a "portable drive" with my usb reader/writer. Very reliable, no problem .

Actually it's pretty cool when you lend cards (or microdrives) to your friends. As soon as a card is inserted in the camera a new directory is created... (i've got an 101_FUJI, 100NIKON, and a D60 directories... on my cards even though I don't own the cameras) as well as music/voice files from the MP3 players.

BTW, The MindStor or similar device will backup everything including the music/voice files... 8)

Default Can I use a different camera to connect to computer?

I have an old Epson PhotoPC 700 that I like to use occasionally. However, it's a serial camera and I only have USB now on my Mac.

Can I throw the CF card into my new Canon S40 and somehow transfer the Epson photos into the computer?
