Chances are, they are retrievable.

See this thread for some tools designed for this purpose:

I downloaded Digital Image recovery & Photo Rescue 2.1 demo but neither worked. I fear that I am doomed.

Are you using a card reader, or trying to recover them via a USB connection to the camera?

I don't know if it would make any difference, but if the images are important, I'd try a card reader.

I have downloaded all the programs listed above with no results. I also went to the local BestBuy & they don't have a card reader for my card (smartmedia) as it is now obsolete. (go figure) I do know that when the camera is plugged into the computer(via usb port) it shows up as a removable drive. I have not taken any new pisc on the card as to not corrupt the pics possibly still there. I started to buy a new card & guess who didn't have one. Any other ideas?

Let me do some digging. There are some utilities around that are specific to SmartMedia.

Whether or not they'd work will depend on how Olympus handles a card format.

Most of the time, a camera is only recreating the FAT (File Allocation Table), leaving the data intact on the card. Ditto when formatting from an Operating System like Windows (making sure you select FAT as the File System Type).

But, some models will overwrite the entire card. For example, I'm using a Konica KD-510z that overwrites everything when formatting a Secure Digital Card.

Interestingly, it doesn't overwrite everything when formatting a Memory Stick (files still recoverable, since it only recreates the FAT).

I'll do a little digging around some forums and see what I come up with specific to SmartMedia.

Vette-Freak.

Best Buy gave you a bum steer.

MANY multicard readers will read smartmedia.

Example: Sandisk 8-in-1 reader.

I inquired on some other forums and I'm waiting on responses.

But, if I understand correctly, certain types of readers and drivers may be required to fix Smartmedia cards when they become corrupted. For example, these that come with SMPREP:

http://www.marshost.com/~rashmun/smprep.htm

But,his Smartmedia card isn't damaged or corrupted(he just accidently formatted it). So, I don't know if the files are recoverable or not.

I've got a feeling that if PhotoRescue can't find the files, then nothing else will either. But, I'd make sure to try a card reader before giving up on it (as the camera's drivers may notbe be giving the operating system and utilities direct access to the media).

I'llwait andsee the responses from users before jumping to any conclusions.
