Default need help on IBM 1GB microdrive

in my search for the IBM 1GB microdrive, I came up with 2 different mfr SKU#s:

:? 09N4071 and 07N5571 :?

:?: are they one and the same?
:?: are they older/newer models of the same drive?
:?: are they different in some way?
:?: is it ok to order either one?

No idea about SKU#, but 512M/1G are the newer drives... The 170M/340M are the older kinds. They all came from IBM now sold to Hitachi.

It could be one SKU# is for the bare drive, and the other SKU for the one bundled with the PCMCIA which is highly recommended (it's difficult to find afterward an open type II CF to PCMCIA PC-adapter with retracting connector).

thnx NHL...
I wasn't aware of the PCMCIA adapter issue.
I'll have to keep that in mind when I pick it up.

Pixrus,

I asked about where to get the PCMCIA adaptor for a microdrive awhile back. Someone said that Radio Shack used to carry them. I don't know if it's still true, thought (and neither did the responder.) I didn't persue it futher.

It was probably me: http://www.stevesforums.com/phpBB2/v...t=6042&start=0

RadioShack also carry another newer PCMCIA type II (not CF-II) with a solid back, that will not work!

I bought a 1Gb microdrive in UK as a drive only (cheapest route), but the vendor sold it with a 3rd party pcmcia adaptor (13).

I bought both, assuming they would be compatible and got a 'Dane-elec' CompactFlash adapter Type 2, solid top and bottom, which works fine.

I guess I should ask the obvious question if I'm going to get this micriodrive thing to work properly.

how many different reader interfaces are possible with the microdrive, what's the slowest, the fastest, and the most reliable?

PCMCIA is the fastest, that's what the CF standard call for... (albeit a miniaturized IDE interface)

Most USB/Firewire readers will also accept the microdrive. They just have to accept a thicker CF-II opening. Remember a CF flash card mimics a hardisk interface, which is what the microdrive is, and not the other way around!

NHL,
I am curious about one thing:
I have a type I CF to PCMCIA PC-adapter (bundled with the CP 950)
Is it electrically compatible to type II CF and microdrive ?
If yes, we can cut out the metallic guard to fit the thicker CF and bingo, right?

Yes, that what some of my techs did @ work. It's just a pin for pin expansion from CF to the wider PCMCIA connector.

What you'll find out is the metal sleeve keep the card centered while the flash cards are being inserted on the pins, without the metal you can come in at an angle to the exposed 50 pins. The open PCMCIA adapter has a retracting connector sleeve on the pins, and the centering guide for the flash cards are on the side.

Also after you removed the metal sleeve a shielding finger with the metal case and the circuit card will falloff, but the adapter still work just fine... I'll bet it will never pass EMI agency test again!
