Is there a device that exists that allows me to download images from a SD card directly to an external USB hard drive without using a computer? I know there are devices that come with their own drive, but since I already have one, I was hoping I could avoid that route.

Yes, you need to get a USB OTG (On-The-Go) Bridge device.

Yes, you need to get a USB OTG (On-The-Go) Bridge device. Its a small device connecting your camera to USB HDD. It runs on 3AAA batt though... example as below:
