Is it ok to get refurbished smart media cards. Found a great price on them and just wondering.

By 'refurbished' I guess you mean used in a cam, pc, MP3Player?

Some issues I mention from experience. First is you know that these cards have a 'write life' OK it's a big number, but you will still get less than new. Second, if a card has been used in another device and has not been 'cleaned' by a full format, the data structure left behind may mean your cam won't initialise with it. Third, there is usually some wear on the gold contacts - so check this out. Fourth, if the re-furb is done by a manufacturer who knows more than most dealers, low level format may have been done to map out any dead memory.

Have a look at some of my postings on formatting cards and WinHex.

You actually might find that the cards are just 'Class B' returns from a user who screwed up their format on first use, or they are no-name brands selling cheap. I'd definitely use some of the techniques I posted to check the cards. It's probably not worth bothering with less than 128Mb if your cam can take it.
