Default Smart Media

Hey,

I am about to buy a digi-cam, and I wanted to
know if there was a big difference between
the lower end smart media cards. ( You could save me a bunch of money.)

I want to get a 128 card, any suggestions?
Which cards are the ones with faster transfer rates? And what is the price?

With SmartMedia there is no difference in data transfer rates between a 2MB or 128MB card. And brand name makes no difference either. SmartMedia is really "Stupid-Media" because these memory cards have no onboard controller, just memory chips.

The data transfer speed is controlled by the camera or card reader as this is where the controller resides.

Here is my Smartmedia question. I have a Olympus D-600L and as it is only able to handle 8meg cards (acording to the stats). Now my question is if I got a larger card say a 16meg or such, would it at least work up to 8meg?

The reason why I ask is becuase this camera can be upgraded to use up to 32meg cards, and since the smaller cards are getting harder to find. But if it can at least use the larger cards but won't store more than 8meg, I can live with it for now (at least till I get a newer one when the 5.5 or 6 megapixel cameras come down in price).

Thanks in advance.

DB, I'm not sure about the smartmedia issue, but if the camera is able to recognize a 16MB card then it will use those 16MB, not just 8MB. You could try to go to a photo store and ask if you can try before you buy...

Jedi, here's a link that can better explain the difference between compactflashes:

Thanks for the info, I don't know of any in this area that carries smart media, but I will check around.

And I know for a fact that the camera is only designed to use up to 8mb cards. But I was wondering if that means that cards higher than 8mb just won't work at all or they will only use 8mb of storage on the card even if the card is say 16mb.

I am hoping that it can use the higher capcity cards and only can store a max 8mb on it as smaler than 16mb cards are getting hard to find.

Sorry but no, there were physical changes to the SmartMedia card's finger contacts and the way they interacte with the controller (located in the camera.)

This is why I dubbed SmartMedia as StupidMedia when it first appeared, it is brainless, the controller resides in the camera or card reader rather than internally in the card as with CompactFlash.

Many people were miffed to say the least when their almost-new camera was not able to use the larger capacity SM cards as they came out. There's never been a compatibility problem with cameras that use CF cards.

Default D-600L Up Grade Info.

DB;

Here is some D-600L upgrade information at the Olympus site

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_se...asp?pressNo=44

For around $100 you use to be able to get the D-600L up graded to accept a 32MB chip. I did it and it works just fine! The bad news is that I believe the offer has expired. Check it out...
