I'm wondering about the relative quality of filter brands.
I know there's some spread in the filter lines offered by
each brand, but I'm just looking for a general impression
about the mid-upper level coated and multicoated filter lines.
I'm not asking for a nit-picky comparison at the 0.5% level,
or about any super specialized products or custom brands.
I'd just like to have some way to gauge whether, say, a B+W filter
is potentially "worth" 4 times what a Bower filter is?
(Very qualitative question, but feel free to be opinionated
as long as you have your reasons.)
I get the impression that B+W, Hoya and Heliopan are
relatively similar quality brands. How much lower on the
totem pole are Tiffen, Sunpak, Bower, Sonia, S&W, Marumi, and such?
Any links on this subject would be helpful, too.
With all the time that is spent comparing the minute
details of camera image quality, is anyone doing the
same for filters?
I currently have a starter set of Promaster filters for my
superzoom, but if I add a fancy teleconverter I may choose a
"better" filter. B+W MRC and Hoya HMC seem to get the most
recommendations, but on a big teleconverter they cost $$$$$$.
