There is a direct correlation between the cost of a filter and how good it is, with the possible exception of OEM filters (from Canon, Nikon, Leica, and Zeiss) which, while they are excellent, tend to be more expensive than third party filters of equal quality.

Both Hoya and Tiffen have some very good filters, but they also make some junk. Hoya's DMC PRO1 and Tiffen Digital HT filters are better than their less expensive filters.

If you're going to buy filters, get good ones. There is no substitute.
