Default DSLR microphone

As I understand it, the mono mic built into DSLR's is pretty much junk. Shopping around for a dedicated external stereo mic I noticed very quickly how unwieldy they tend to be. Are there other stereo mic solutions that can be used instead? Perhaps a body mic or ...well anything really? Thank you.

I'm pretty sure I have seen some small mikes which mount to the hot shoe of the camera without being too obtrusive. If you don't use a shoe mounted video light, that might be a solution. If you need both, there are DSLR video mounts which can accommodate both.

Here's an example of a fairly inexpensive unit which is well regarded. http://www.adorama.com/TSTM2X.html

For $100 or less you get a ZOOM H1, usable with connection to camera or without.
