Most pros use a blower or a brush to get the dust off their lens before applying a lens cloth or anything else.

The idea is to get the grit off your lens before you start rubbing it with anything.

I use just a little bulb blower that has a sable-like brush end. First I blow off the excess grit or dust, then I brush it a little.

If there's still any kind of smear or mark on the lens, I use lens tissue.

As a last case resort, I use a fluid and a cloth to remove a built up mark.

I clean my lens about once every three months. More than that, your probably doing more harm than good unless you live in a very dusy area or work in extreme conditions.

The main thing is to keep your lens cap on and the camere in a case when your not using it. Leaving a camera out will attract dust.
