Is either of these brands better than the other? Thank you.

B+W is the best - the clearest glass, scrath resistent coatings, brass rings.
Hoya makes very good filters but price them into four diffferent quality categories - Regular (mono coated one side), HMC (multi coated both sides), SHMC (six MC coatings per side), & SHMC Pro 1 (six MC's per side, thicker glass and anti-reflective coating). |

How about Hoya vs Tiffen? Is Tiffen filter coated?
Thanks. |

I thought the general consensus was that these filters were not necessary on digital SLRs.

A lot of the effects can be simulated in software.
Things like the polarizer cannot, this filter will do things like cut out reflections and provide detailes that cannot be recreated with effects software. And the IR filters for infrared photography. Also there is the "demon filter" AKA the skylight 1a or uv filter that is used mainly for lens protection that some people love and some hate thus sparks much heated debate :-) Peter. |

B+W make several straight uv filters(no color added) Which uv filter is there top of the line.I am not looking for the slim filter!

it seems the death of the optical filter may be a bit premature. fixing it in the mix doesnt always work and can be more complex then you think.
i have the usual bunch of protective filters with the caveat that i will remove them as needed if i see that they have a detrimental effect on the image such as ghosting. CP filters and my trusty galen rowell filters. i intermix B&W and Hoya HMC/SMC UVfilters |

Dang, the G. Rowells, I can't believe I forgot to mention those.
The grads and split ND's are some of my highest used filters. Peter. |

I use Hoya HMC Super UV filter and find it very good, as far as B & W they have a filter called MRC which I think replaced the others.
