Hi,I've noticed a few "screen protectors" for digi-cam LCDs, and I was wondering if this is a necessary item or just "snake oil"

well if you want to protect your lcd screen from getting scratched, then yes thay are necessary. I'm not a big fan of the thin pieces of film, they do protect from scratchs, but if you really want to protect your screen from damage, take a look at the "da protector" at daproducts.com. I have one on all four of my cameras. they are much clearer than the film, so easier to see your lcd, and they offer a lot more protection. And they are pretty cheap too, around $6 plus $2 shipping US.

i had a screen protector on an old olympus for a while, was very hard to see the picture clearly through it

newer cams like my e300 have hyper crystal screens that are very very hard to mark

How about the Canon SD600? Does it have "built in" protection?

no it doesn't have built in protection, I have an SD400 that I have the "da protector" on. It fits great and offers not only protection for scratches but also protection form impact.
