Default Generic electronic trigger for digital camera

I cannot believe that they build millions of digital cameras and they all have the same old pressure-button trigger. Although I realize there are a very few cameras out there with electronic releases, there is no real choice.
What I need is to be able to choose between cameras that let me connect either a pressure transducer, a proximity sensor, a photocell trigger, a trip release trigger, a wireless remote trigger, an ultrasonic trigger, etc. This can easily be provided by a generic electronic trigger with published specs. Then you also have a whole new industry - people building their own electronic triggers, or manufacturing triggers for others. Obviously, one of those triggers could be your usual finger-pressure button.

Welcome. I moved your post down to our Misc Accessories Forum (as it's not a Contact Steves kind of issue).

Programmable shutter releases have been around for a long time, used mostly for time lapse photography (intervalometer type features) and exposure bracketing. They tend to be more camera brand specific, since you have different ways of triggering cameras with proprietary protocols used via USB Connections, etc.)

Some cameras also support remote tethering with available Software Developer Kits that allow vendors to offer a more customized solution. Here's one such solution that uses a connection from a camera to a PC, allowing remote triggering of some Canon models via an iPhone interface. ;-)

P.S.

Here's a trigger that can also respond to any kind of sensor that can close a connection (scroll down to the trigger sections on these pages, including one showing their optional PDA interface). It's not cheap though.

Here's a less expensive model that can support contact closures from external sensors. Harbortronics has been around for a long time, and is well known for their triggers for Nikon Coolpix models.
