A lens is too heavy if you can't shoot without shake. That is the ONLY reason to use a tripod (leaving aside those shooting HDR's or panorama's).

A lens mount can only support so much weight, generally about 3 pounds. (That's why lenses that weigh more than 3 pounds have their own tripod mounts.) If you mount a heavy lens on a camera body, and only support the body, the weight of the lens will cause the mount to fail. Alternatively, if you support the lens, the mount can support the weight of the body.

... and even if the mount doesn't fail, it can deform, either temporarily or permanently, altering the distance from the lens mount to the image sensor.
