I haven't looked into pricing, is a $75 filter worthy to protect $1500+ glass?

A $1500+ lens probably takes a pretty large filter, so a $75 filter that fits it will probably significantly degrade image quality. That's probably not something you want to do if you spent $1500+ on a lens.

The tiffen HT is a really high grade filter. It will not degrade as much. But it is all about compromises. A 100 dollar tiffen would be a better option then a 60 hoya for the 1500 dollar lens.
