Default Tripod mounting

Bit of a silly question ... what is the purpose of the small button (on a spring) next to the screw mounting on a tripod? It seems to score the bottom of the camera when you attach it. Can you get an adaptor to fit between that screw mount and the camera or is it ok to use as is?

Thanks!

if it is what i think your referring to it is a anti-rotation post for video cameras. some have it some don't. it is about 15mm ctr to ctr from the large screw it is spring loaded for those that don't have the extra hole such as still cameras to drop out of the way. sony vids have them i think most vids do too.

put a helping of grey tape on the mounting plate over the pin.
