I've gotten conflicting advice from Nikon and the company, Sakar, which made the lens cleaning kit I bought for the Nikon D70.

Which of the following is ok to use from lens cleaning fluid:

70% isopropyl alcohol
91% isopropyl alcohol
99% isopropyl alcohol
ethyl alcohol

Or is it none of the above?

Thanks!

I have some that came with my cheap cleaning kit and I would say it's no more than 30% ethyl alcohol. It seems to leave very light streaks so I don't like to use it. I prefer lighter fluid.

Hi All

I would use the 99% iso. just be careful not to get it on anything plastic or rubber it sometimes has a unpleasant reaction.

I would also invest in some good lens tissue. anything that crinkles is too hard. I feel it is better than a cloth as you throw the dirt away and dont keep in on the reusable cloth. alwasy put to littel rather than too much and put the solution on the tissue not the lens. So keep one damp tissue to whipe the lens and keep a dry one to immediatly dry the lens. I also use finger cots or non powder latex gloves so no skin oil gets anywhere. If you use a good eye loop with light to look for dust on a lens you will never stop cleaning ;o)

If the solution is too slow to evaporate it leaves streaks.

I have also heard of some people cleaning Canon 20D sensor with methonol (spl).

All these are just fine. Don't worry about it. Alcohols won't dissolve most plastics, but will dissolve grease and similar substances. Don't use acetone (nail varnish remover) or other aldehydes & ketones, because they will destroy the plastics of your camera.

'Meths' or methylated spriits is a good cleaner. It's mostly ethanol with a bit of methanol, and a few other additives.
