I manage a photo printing store in Canada. I have been told that my magentic backing of my name badge can possibly erase or cause errors on the camera media cards. Is there any proof of this?

Tks

It's (good old) floppy disks and tapes which are damaged by magnets.
Memory cards don't use magnetic recording... but it's better avoid touching metal contacts of those cards which have them on surface because static electricity can destroy them.

Also, your tag can be read by magnetic readers but the data strip isn't magnetic...

The stripe is magnetic however from a short distance away the sum of it's magnetic fields will be zero (the one polarities will be balanced by the zero polarities.) As stated elsewhere memory card can be damaged by static electricity although they do contain circuitry to reduce sensitivity to this. They are generally not sensitive low level of electromagnetic radiation such as emited by airport xrays, cell phones and CRT moniters. You can intentionally destroy a memory card with a microwave oven (uh, don't do this at home:?).
