I'm currently traveling the world through Semester at Sea and during my adventure in Brazil, I seem to have gotten dust or dirt particled embedded in my 50-200mm lens. It doesn't look as if it's affected the image quality, but there is friction when I zoom in and out.

Is this something I should be worried about? Is there a way to somehow clean the lens and restore normal operation?

Unless you know how to repair photo equipment I would get the lens cleaned by a professional repair shop.
