i have a Kodak cx7300 (3.2mp) (SD card) and a olympus c-725 (3.0mp) (xd card) both have 256 cards in them. the kodak will hold 293 pix at highest resolution. the oly will hold 117 at highest and 341 at the same size but lower resolution. why do they do this? is it the cards? the compression? i thought they were both jpg. does anyone understand this? thanks james.

The number of images that can fit on a card depend on a few things. Mega-pixels, image quality, amount of JPEG compression and even the type of images taken can all affect image size, and thus how many images can fit on a card. It is not suprising that two different cameras fit different amounts of pics on a particular card.

JPG compression can be applied at different levels the more compression tye more data that is lost. The Kodak is applying a higher level oc compression than the Olympus.
