I am considering a canon i900D and wonder what quality B&W prints I can expect and what I have to learn to be able to produce good prints. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about Canon printers, but you can find a lot of information at the Digital Black and White The Print Yahoo group.

The best B&W printer that we have reviewed so far is the Epson 2200 but for most non-pro users it's too pricey. The next best printer is the HP 7960, it has a special gray ink cartridge just for B&W prints.
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/hp7960.html The Canon printers do not do B&W very well I am sad to report. |

Thanks for the info. I am considering the HP 7660 which I believe takes the new gray cartreidge thats used in the 7960 but is less expensive.

There are quad-tone and hex-tone blacks available for several Epson models...sorry but I don't have any more information than that, but we have discussed them at my camera club.
