Default corrupted data

Can anybody help me please??(In simple terms an elderly confused person can follow!!)
I have a Canon FS100 camcorder using SDHC memory card and a Canon Powershot S3 IS using SD card. I download images onto my computer directly from the camcorder and via an SD card reader for the camera.
Once the video/images are on the computer I download them again.via a SDHC card reader, onto a 8GB SDHC card for safe keeping.
I also have on this card images taken with an old Kodak camera and images taken from the Net.
Just recently, when I open a folder, one or two files will refuse to open and the computer says it can not trace the source of the image. Files in other folders will also refuse to open.
It is likely I will lose all my video and photos at this rate, a few at a time.
I think this is some sort of compatablity problem but no idea where or why.
If it's of any relevence my computer is about 7 years old.

Have you tried to copy the files your hard disk drive, and open them from there?

How are you getting rid of the images on the cards after you have downloaded them? The most bullet proof method is to format the card in your camera.
