Hi,
I bought myself a Canon Powershot G7 and itcame with an adapter and a 58mm 3.0x tele lens. However unless your fully zoomed in, it cuts the edges off (I think is called vignetting). Any help? What am I doing wrong, should I have a filter? Thanks, Newbie Rich P.S. picture attached! Edit: The adapter says it is for the Powershot G9, andthe height of it is55mm. |

Thats normal and expected with front mounted tcons.
As you found out, use at max or near max zoom. What make is the tcon? Lot of worthless ones out there especially x2 and x3 , eg those from crystal optics, tokina, anything marketed as "hi-def, titanium, Pro" etc |

The only worry you have is in the quality of your pictures. Those kind of add-on lenses have a well deserved reputation for vignetting, purple fringing, barrel/pincushion distortion, ... Enough to keep anyone who reads reviews from buying one.
But you already have one so go out and play with it. Find out what the problems are, and where it works well - or at least good enough. That will help you figure out what your next camera should be like. |

The makers assume that, if you need to use the teleconverter, you are doing so because you have exceeded the range of the camera's zoom, so they only make them to work at full zoom. In order to build one that would give you more range, the lens would have to be about three times bigger than your camera, and weigh 5 times more as well.

Ah. okay then. I was worried I was being an idiot! :?
I'm not a professional, not even amateur, just have the G7 as my everyday point and click really, just wanted something decent so I can expand on it, the lens was useful at the zoo, go some amazing pictures there. I didn't notice anything wrong with the pictures though, will look more closely! Thanks for all your help. Rich |
