when i take pictures in sports mode with my d90 the camera only shoots one picture instead of shooting rapid fire..can anyone tell me how to fix this

There's a button on the top, near the LCD Control Panel, that's used for setting the Release Mode. See page 64 of the Nikon D90 User's Manual for how to use it.
You can also control the frame rate of the Continuous low speed Release Mode, if you don't want the full 4.5 fps. See page 182 on how to set that. You should also use the AF-C autofocus mode, which will maintain focus on moving subjects, frame after frame. See page 54 on how to set that.
