Default Depth of Field

I am new to this photography lark. I have always enjoyed snapping off on a point and shoot, but looking to be a bit more serious and deeper into it now.

Just got a Dimage 7i (1st time with an SLR type camera).

I have read a lot about depth of field and how to achieve these effect with apeture settings etc but no matter what I do I cant seem to get the Object in focus, backgorund blurry effect.

How do I achieve this?

Many thanks in advance

Use the maximum zoom (or as much as the situation permits) and the widest aperture: 200mm and f/3.5

Have the subject as close to you as possible and the background as far away as possible.

Use manual focus and the viewfinder--not the LCD. Adjust the focus starting in front of the subject and stop adjusting just as the subject comes into focus.

Of course, for small objects, the (long zoom) macro setting will give you a shallow depth of field whether you want it or not.

I agree with mr. Hunt - but after that -use an editor to create the desired blur!
