Good digital camera for black and white pictures?

I'm looking to buy my first digital camera and one of the features I'd like it to have is the ability to take good black and white photos.
I know I can always use programs such as Photoshop to change my color pics but it's just not the same to me as capturing an image in b/w.

Any suggestions in the sub $400, 3 megapixel , more advanced than a point and shoot range?

Thanks!

heres's one suggestion

becuase most programs even basic photo programs like paint I got with Windows 98 I think :D
You can change the grey scale if you are going to print or view them or email them just spend the extra 20secs in the photo program and not the 20secs or more doing it in the field

Well that is What I think ! 8)

I think you're thinking the wrong way. Here's why...

Consider shooting in color then use software to transform the picture to B&W using PhotoShop or Elements.

The printer then becomes the primary issue. Consider spending your money on the printer that will do the best job for you. There are Epsons that do a great job in this mode.

If you don't mind a 2mp camera, the Nikon Coolpix 2500 does a great job in B&W mode, use the "copy" mode, that mode is supposed to be used for copying signs, black letters on white board, but I use it for taking B&W photos.
Fantastic B&W shots. :)

Thanks, I'll check it out!

BTW, do you have any sample pics?

Bravo,
I have no web page to put pictures on, I tried pbase but I could not get it to work for me.
I wonder if Steve would consider having a picture gallery on this site so those of us that don't have a web page could display our photos. :)
