Default Help with new camera.

I'm looking at bying my first digicam, but have no idea what I want. Have never taken much pictures at all, mainly because of price and time developing the films.
Looking at buying Nikon Coolpix4300, basically because I like the looks, it has manual settings and people says 3MP is enough, thus opt for 4MP, one step over recomended seems to be good at least when it comes to computers .
Main considerations would be good pictures, small size and long battery life. The manual settings in the 4300 is a good plus, don't know if I ever use it but I won't buy any new camera in a long time and it seems to be good fun to use. I want to be able to take pix of cars and my wife would probably like to shoot our cats, but I don't think this will make any difference in what to choose.
Would really like some opinions on this, have read a lot of reviews on the Nikon, but have no idea what the options are or if I just should go and buy the 4300 and stop pondering.
