Please review your camera owner's manual section on external flash to see if the camera should be put in a special mode as well as any special instructions regarding external flash. The flash should just slide into the hotshoe on the top of the camera and lock in place.

Of interest to you are the flash manual and automatic modes. Please review your flash owner's manual regarding these two modes.

Automatic mode will suggest one of two apertures based on the ISO setting on your camera. You would set these on your camera probably using "M" or "A" modes and just shoot. The flash will take care of the rest.

Manual mode probably requires you to measure the distance between the camera/flash and the subject then calculate the aperture, set the camera and shoot.
