Default image size question

Hi I am trying to understand image size stuff.
How is it that an image that is 3648 x 2736 can be anywhere from 1.01MB to 2.14MB?

It all depends on the detail - if you take a picture of a piece of paper with only one line drawn down the center, the camera doesn't have to store much information - just that everything except the line is one color and tone, pretty simple to say (all except for row X = white, row X = black). Now take a picture of a million thin rubberbands crumpled in a container and the camera has to store a huge amount of data because it's possible that there wouldn't be much for continuous blocks. At least that's how I understand it.

Harriet has it right: the compression scheme used for JPEG images attempts to give you the smallest file size it can, based on the quality level you select. The more detail in the photo, the larger the file size must be to contain that detail. Your stated image size could be considerably larger than 2.14MB if you select the highest quality level, and there is a lot of detail in the scene. I have a number of pictures of 2560x1920 pixels which are around 4.5MB.
