When the Tamron 17-50m f/2.8 was first introduced, it did not have a built in focus motor. After Nikon removed the camera body based motor in newer entry level models (for example, the D40, D40x, D60 and D5000 bodies do not have the built in focus motors found in all other Nikon dSLR bodies), Tamron starting manufacturing this lens with a Built in Motor for better compatibility with the new entry level Nikon models.

Since there are versions of this lens with and without a built in motor, make sure you buy one that has a built in motor if you want Autofocus with a D40 (since that camera body does not have a built in Autofocus motor, any lens you use will need one to Autofocus).
