Default Need help on new cam

I just picked up a Nikon DSC-6300 last week. Now I should tell you, that I know NOTHING about cameras in general. I know just enough to point it, take the picture, and hope it turns out. I was playing around with it last night in the house, trying to to take some macro shots. I do know how to set it on macro. Well, I shouldnt say that 100%. I can set it to macro from the dial, and that is real easy. But then I can go into scenes, and click on "close ups". Is that doing the same thing?? When I was trying to take the pictures in macro setting, I would get real close to the object, push the shutter button half way down to focus, and where the green box comes up telling me its focussed, I would get a red box instead. I have noticed this other times too, when not taking macro shots. Question is, what is the simple answer to this? When this happens, I can adjust the zoom, so its not so close to the object, and the red box will change to green, but what is the point of having zoom, if there are some distances that I cant take a pic. I hope I explained this so someone can understand what I am getting at. Thanks!

The green box- as you know- is focus confirmation, unlike the red one.... which is telling you you're either too close to focus (10cm min on 6300 at wide angle) or there is not enough light for the contrast detection AF to work properly...
