Default Newbie Help! Canon Powershot S5..

As you will probably know this camera has a built in 12 x zoom lens.. if I add a 2x telephoto will it make it an effective 24 x zoom ( if I can keep it steady enough) ? And are there any cheap but good generic ones available as opposed to the canon ones.. many thanks..

It will double the effective focal length for entire range of the camera, but won't change the zoom ratio. Your longest focal length with the teleconverter lens attached, would, however, be 24x the shortest focal length without the converter lens.
Since these lenses are made for telephoto use, they usually cause vignetting at shorter focal lengths (less zoom), so you would have to remove it for wider angle shots.
Hope I explained what you need.

Also be aware that the cheap 2x tele converters are not 2x, they're 1.2x optically in spite of how they're marked or advertised.
