Default Newbie with Olympus 4000

Our last camera was a Fuji 2600z which lasted two years. I wanted to reuse the SM that the Fuji used since we bought a lot of cards and after researching came up with the Olympus 4000. Just received the camera last week and took some trial pics to make sure the camera was working. I haven't read the manual, print or CD, but understand this is essential.

What I'm looking for is practical advice on what I need to do now. Those of you that have had the 4000 for a while, are there things that you wished you had done right from the start? The biggest thing I can think of is the lens cap. I knew from researching that the lens cap being on the lens when the camera is turned on caused a lot of problems for some people in stripped gears. I figured my wife would be the one to forget to remove the lens cap, but it's turning out to be me. I'd love some ideas on how to resolve this issue. I know there's some type of adapter that people use for filters with this camera. Can someone point me in the direction of where to get something like this and what it's called?
