My camera, an Olympus D-580, is about 3 years old. It takes good pictures but there is a long wait between pushing the button and the camera finally taking the picture. I don't know whether it is just shutter lag or the camera taking fovever to focus, first. My question: has much of this been eliminated in the new cameras? I am taking about compact cameras that are under about $400. What am I looking for when shopping for a new camera in terms of how fast it takes the picture?

That kinda depends on how you are triggering the shutter release on your camera...are you prefocusing, by depressing the shutter release halfway until the camera locks focus on your subject, or are you just depressing the shutter release fully when taking a pic? The D-580's shutter lag is nearly 10 times faster when prefocused.

The new cameras are faster, but they are still much faster when prefocused then when not.
