Default strobe effect

What is the strobe effect on external flashes and is it important to me for a Coolpix 8700? I am trying to decide what type of flash to buy. I am debating whether I need one I can hold away from the camera or not. Would like to take some family portraits and don't want red eye.

Please help with any info. Thanks.

Strobe-effect is when the flash fires a certain number of flashs in a certain amount of time. You will be able to catch i.e. a Golfplayers swing in steps in the same shots. It's not that easy though.

Don't confuse this with the preflashes that the Red Eye Function delivers. These flashes (execpt the last one) is not being fired when the shutter is open, but before.

These are two different things.
