what is NOISE ?

I have heard this term used a few times, but i'm not to sure what it is, i guess it is detremental to a picture and is caused by many things like to much sharpness ....

but what actually is it, can i see it, i obviously cant hear it!!!.

In certain lighting, ISO speeds, in camera sharpening, etc., you can clearly see 'specs,' in your photo that should not be there. Those specs are 'noise,' in the digicam world.

From the very ... quiet Steve Digicam Dictionary :

Quote:

Noise - Pixels in your digital image that were misinterpreted. Usually occurs when you shoot a long exposure (beyond 1/2-second) or when you use the higher ISO values from 400 or above.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words....

Here is a sample of an image with nearly zero noise and the same image with lots of noise. One was taken at ISO 100 with flash, the high noise image at ISO 1600 with no flash. This is an extreme example just to demonstrate the differences. Noise is more easily seen in areas of an image where there are smooth and even colors like skys or in shadow areas....
