Will I need a new printer?

I am looking into buying a digital SLR, specifically the Canon Rebel.
I own a Canon S820 photo printer that I use with a 3 megapixel Olympus camera and I have been pretty happy with the photo quality.

My question is:
Is a 2400x1200dpi, 4 picoliter printer adequate for a 6 megapixel camera or will I have to buy a new printer?

You do not need to replace your printer.

I agree. While some of the newer canons might do a little beter job and might be faster, the s820 is still a very capable photo printer.

Spring for some good quality paper (I like Epson Heavyweight Matte) and print. Your printer should do a good job for you. Some of the newer printers might do a little bit better, but it might be best to see what your printer does with the new camera files before you spend the long green on a new printer.

Thank you for the responses!
But, now I'm thinking that I'm looking at this the wrong way.

My original question stems from my assumption that, both printed in the same 4x6 format and with the same printer, a digital photo taken with a 6mp camera would look clearear and sharper than the same photo taken with a 3mp camera. Keeping with that assumption, I was concerned about my printer being able to "keep up" with the better quality of a 6mp camera.

Is this correct or will the megapixels only make a difference if I want to print bigger photos?
