I purchased what was supposed to be a lens hood in an on-line auction, but the item does not open like a lens hood (as far as I can tell). Might it be some kind of focus ring or something? The threads are 55mm on both sides.

Below are some pictures:

Unless my eyes deceive me, the object looks like a step-up ring; the part with threads on the outside looks smaller to me than the part with inner threads.

It a 55mm rubber lens hood that screws onto your lens filter ring. It also has an inner ring that allows you to screw on a filter. It looks odd because the rubber is folded back on itself. You can get them at any Ritz/Wolf camera store for about $2.00. I use them on a few lenses & they work fine.

That explains the rather large overall diameter.

I had one of those rubber lens hood on my Mamiya Sekor 500DTL. Mine lasted about 10 years before the rubber started to crack.

Thank you for your replies. A lens hood that pops open is what I was hopingto buy, and this looks just like one. But when I examine it there is no rubber, as it is all hard plastic. I have tried to pop it open, just in case I had missed something, but it will not budge.
