Wrams,

The answer depends on what types of portraits you plan on taking.

If you're taking a group shot or using backdrops, you'll be stopped down to f8 or so at which time the focal length needs to be wide enough (17-70 will work nicely). Since your stopped down, sharpness shouldn't be as much an issue.

But, if you want a nice blurred background of each individual child then something like an 85mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 (depending on how wide you want the shot to be) might be a good choice.

In all cases, lighting is going to be important. A good external flash is a must. 2 would be better and a strobe setup with softbox and a reflector is probably best.

So, what types of portraits were you planning on doing (indoors, outdoors, backdrop, shallow DOF?) and what external flashes / lighting do you have? If none, your wife's money is probably better spent on lighting than on another lens.

Iv'e got no light setup myself apart from a 430ex with sync cord also i can borrow the light setup from a Mate who has standalone lights which sync with his flash and and are remote!! The Portrait will be of individual children and with backdrops...Which i have about 8 different colours...I was thinking of using Blue/Green or Green/Gold and iv'e got pink and whites and other colour which i don't really want to use..!!

I think i've covered all the questions!!

It also depends somewhat on the kind of portraits you want to take.

I currently have my 28mm f1.8 set at f1.8 in aperture priority - it will probably stay that way until the spring.

Here are a few I took of my daughter on Saturday.

Remember She's Paying for a New Lens!!!
Well, in that case I'd tell her I need a Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM

I agree with Kalypso,
Your 50mm is equal to about an 80mm lens on your 30D which is a pretty good focal length for protraits, but heck if you can get a new lens out of the deal I would tell her none of the ones you have will work...you have to have a new lens.

Haha,

Well then either the 28mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8 should do nicely.
